Swiping Through Childhood – Are We Setting Up a Generation to Struggle?

David Barker Quote

“Where are the early years stats on tech?” We get asked this a lot—and we hear you.

This powerful piece by David Barker, CEO of Youth Talk is a must-read:

Swiping Through Childhood – Are We Setting Up a Generation to Struggle?

His words speak volumes about what professionals are already seeing—and the ripple effects we will continue to see. The early years matter. Birth to five is not too early to start thinking about tech use.

As a movement, we’re committed to sharing the data, stories, and voices that help shape a healthier, more connected start for our children.

The digital world isn’t going anywhere, nor should it. Technology can be brilliant, creative, and connecting. But when screen time begins to replace real-world interaction, imaginative play, and emotional connection, we have to ask: what are we sacrificing? - David Barker, CEO Youth Talk

So... What About Childhood?

Here in the UK, we’ve yet to see bold national guidelines around screen use in early childhood—but we believe they’re on the horizon.

The conversation is shifting. Parents, educators, and mental health professionals are beginning to recognise the long-term impact of early screen exposure—and what it may be costing the next generation.

That’s why Unplugged Early Years exists.

We’re not here to respond to a crisis—we’re here to help prevent one. By focusing on the earliest years of life—birth to five—we’re laying the foundations for emotional wellbeing, secure attachment, and healthy development before problems arise.

We don’t use shame or scare tactics. But we do believe in honest, informed conversations. In conscious, empowered choices. And in giving families the support and tools they need to protect mental health from the very beginning.

Because prevention isn’t just powerful—it’s essential.
